Homecoming?

That night, I am sitting on a balcony that overlooks the skyline of Boston. I have to admit, looking at the city, that it is really pretty here. The trees are all turning colors—red, orange, and yellow. And the skyline is incredible.

I’m waiting on news about the school, which has me feeling anxious. Sander hasn’t really updated me on the situation since we got here. He’s been on the phone a lot, and I’ve just been left to entertain myself, which is hard considering I left my own phone in Mr. Carson’s room. I can’t even text Charlie to see if he’s all right.

The door to the room opens up and Sander walks onto the balcony, taking a seat in a chair beside me. He doesn’t say anything for a bit. He just looks at the view.

“Is everybody okay?” I ask, my voice quiet and timid. I’m scared of what his answer will be.

“Yeah. The bullet went straight through the guard and missed anything important. He should be back at school in a few weeks,” Sander says. “The gunman was detained. My team was able to determine he was just a local. He was drunk and high out of his mind. Honestly, the guy had no clue what he was even doing.”

My chest feels lighter—like I had been carrying a ton of bricks on it, but they’re gone now.

I can breathe again.

“So, it didn’t have anything to do with me?” I ask.

“Nope,” he answers, looking as relieved as I feel.

“Does that mean we can go back to campus?”

“Not tonight,” Sander answers. “The sun would set before we got back and I’d feel more comfortable going there in the daylight.”

“Okay,” I say, looking out at the sky.

He’s right. The sun is about to set, and we’ve got the perfect view from our room.

“Boston is pretty,” Sander says, looking out at the skyline that I’ve been staring at for the past few hours.

“It is,” I say.

We sit beside each other in silence, watching as the sun slowly goes over the horizon. The sky lights up with shades of pink, orange and purple. I might not be watching the sun set into the Pacific Ocean, like I used to back home, but this is still nice. Really nice.

“Do you want pizza?” Sander asks.

“I thought we weren’t allowed to eat junk food anymore,” I say, turning my head so I can look at him.

He grins. “Jax isn’t here to tell us no.”

“Okay,” I say.

His smile is contagious.

How is it fair for one boy to be so absurdly beautiful?

Once again I am reminded that he is so out of my league.

Sander gets out his phone, ordering us a pizza from some app on his phone. He doesn’t ask how I like my pizza because he just knows. It’s such a Sander thing—for him to know me so completely, better than I know myself most of the time.

“It’ll be here in thirty minutes,” he says, locking his phone and putting it away.

“Good,” I say.

“Oh, Charlie said to tell you that he got your stuff from Mr.
